Merino wool is an incredible component with many benefits. Firstly, it has excellent temperature regulation properties. Very simply, because of the fact that the wool fibres can lock in about 80% of its own weight in air. And air is the best available insulating material.
In addition to locking in lots of air, wool can also capture large quantities of moisture: up to 30% of its weight. Thanks to the heat of the body, the moisture stored in the wool is warmed up. A truly natural air conditioning system keeping the body of the hiker at the right temperature and reducing the "freezing-effect", when the body cools after exercise.
Lastly, wool is also naturally technical, because it naturally reduces odours. Wool fibres actually have their own anti-bacterial properties. By blocking the development of bacteria, they block the development of odours. Note: these properties do not diminish after a number of washes. A highly appreciable benefit when one has been on a hiking expedition lasting several days.
