How to choose my winter jacket?

Worn when hiking or when resting, compact or bulkier, to be worn in cold to very cold temperatures, selecting the correct winter jacket is not always easy...Discover our recommendations helping you make the right choice!

When selecting a winter jacket, 2 criteria must be taken into consideration: the outside temperature and the intensity of the effort.

1/ The outside temperature

The first question to ask when selecting a winter jacket is: in what temperature will it be used? In essence, all our winter jackets are tested to guarantee excellent comfort according to extremely accurate temperature ranges when hiking. To offer such a guarantee, our tests are completed under 5 km/h walking conditions, a light 5 km/h wind and with a full winter outfit: fleece underneath, pair of gloves, warm trousers, socks and hat.

FOR VERY COLD WEATHER (BELOW -10°C)
Opt for bulky winter jackets, the padding is thicker which allows you to trap the air and offer improved protection from the cold

FOR COLD WEATHER (TEMPERATURES OVER -10°C)
For warmer temperatures, our range of micro-winter jackets are suitable, they have less thicker padding, making them lighter and more compact than the bulkier winter jackets.

2/ The intensity of your effort

Intense hiking refers to an activity which necessitates sustained effort (for example owing to the elevation). When completing such hikes or when going hiking for multiple days, we recommend selecting and compact and light winter jacket. The compactness enables it to be stored in a small pouch or in one of the jacket pockets and can be easily carried within a backpack and provided warmth during resting periods.

In the case of shorter, less intense hikes, it is possible to wear the winter jacket and so a less compact one is an option.

Feathers, wadding, what is the difference?

With the same outdoor temperature, feathers are lighter and more compact. The advantage of wadding, however, is that it keeps you warm even when damp. It also dries more quickly. Additionally it is easy to care for which is not the case with feathers which require more accurate care. --> Discover our recommendations for washing a feather winter jacket".
We provide the fill level (indicated in CUIN) for each of our feather-filled winter jackets. With the same quantity, the higher the CUIN, the warmer and more compact the winter jacket.

GOOD TO KNOW: Our winter jackets are water repellent, not waterproof  therefore, in the case of rain, we recommend wearing a waterproof jacket or a poncho underneath.
