1/ What are uv rays?

UV stands for Ultra Violet. This refers to the various rays emitted by the sun that are invisible to the naked eye.

Two of them – UVA and UVB – pass through the ozone layer and affect us daily. Only one category – UVC – is blocked by the ozone layer.

> UVA rays are most the most dangerous for the eyes as they can reach as far back as the eye lens in adults and the retina in children.

> UVB rays can be absorbed by the eye lens in adults.

2/ The risks of uv radiation on the eye

The eye has a cornea that forms a natural barrier against radiation from the sun. This very thin film serves to protect our eyes from the outside environment and absorbs a small part of UV rays.

The lens, meanwhile, is found in the eyeball and protects your retina.

Every day, these two small natural barriers are put to the test when you are exposed to sunlight. This is especially the case during repeated unprotected exposure.

As a result, sun rays pose a danger to your eyes: they can speed up ageing and tissue degeneration or even cause corneal burns.

3/ How to properly protect yourself from uv rays ?

To properly protect yourself, it is thus vital to wear sunglasses whenever the sun is present.

It is a simple fact that 9 out of 10 people wear sunglasses on the beach but only half of them do so when engaging in a sporting activity in town.

And yet the sun is present at all times of the day and in all seasons.

This is even truer from April to June, when the sun is at its highest level.
